Amir Chakhmaq Complex
The great tradition of constructing massive public squares in Iran dates back to
many centuries ago.
Naghsh-e Jahan in Isfahan and
Amir Chakhmaq in Yazd are two
defining examples of such public spaces. The former needs no introduction, as it
is the largest historic square in the world. The latter, Amir Chakhmaq Square
spans over 5346 m2 and includes Amir Chakhmaq Complex. This grand monument
consists of six sections:
1. A mosque
2. A well
3. A caravanserai
4. A bathhouse
5. A confectionery
6. A tekyeh (a holy place of mourning for Shia
Muslims). Amir Chakhmaq Mosque is a historic edifice built in 1438 during the reign of Timurid
dynasty. In the exterior of the mosque, one can enjoy the signature Iranian art
of tile-work and calligraphy. The plaster-work and the colorful Persian rugs
covering the expansive floor is extraordinary. People perform their daily prayer
under the fabulous dome of the mosque. Tourists visiting the place at noon
should wait until the end of the ceremony to see the interior of the mosque.
Together with Jameh Mosque of Yazd, Amir Chakhmaq Complex is the most visited of
Yazd’s tourist attractions.
