Yasuj

Yasuj

There are many stories behind the appellation of Yasuj. Some believe it is a derivative of the Persian name for Jasmine (Yas). Others hold that it is a variation on Yasij, an arrow with a royal emblem. Contenders of both sides on the etymological argument above will find ample proof to support their position in the nature and history of Yasuj. On account of its fresh mountainous weather (Yasuj’s official elevation is 1870 above the sea level), the countryside of Yasuj and the public parks in the domain of the city are carpeted with flowers in the warm season. Moreover, many people grow jasmine in their courtyards. As a result of that in the spring the city is redolent of jasmine. As for the second historic root, the soil of Yasuj has been treaded by many mighty kings. The vengeful arrow of Alexander the Great’s army was shot at the heart of Persia through the gates of Yasuj.

Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad whose capital is Yasuj, is a province that links the western Iran to Fars province and also to the coastal regions northwest of Persian Gulf. Yasuj, along with Kermanshah and Shahr-e Kord are among the cities visited by people who enter Iran through the western borders and want to reach the southern tourist destinations such as Shiraz and Bandar Abbas. You can reach Yasuj easily by intercity buses from all major cities in Iran. There are also direct flights from Tehran’s Mehrabad Airport to Yasuj Airport.

The top three highlights of Yasuj which are crucial to its tourism industry are Yasuj Waterfall, Old City of Dehdasht and Cheshmeh Belqeis Garden.

Yasuj Waterfall

Yasuj Waterfall is the most visited natural sight in Yasuj. It lies about 3 kilometers north of the city in the famous Forest Park of Yasuj. Especially popular during the warm seasons, the waterfall is clothed in a rich natural setting bedecked with breathtaking flowers and fruit groves. The ten meters high waterfall flows into a plunge pool and then streams along several canals deep into the forest. The main source of Yasuj waterfall is a number of natural springs scattered among the ravines in Zagros Mountains. Old City of Dehdasht

Dehdasht is one of the most ancient cities in Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad province. The old town of Dehdasht dates back to the Sassanid era. The complex includes many historic monuments such as a caravanserai, a public bath and a shrine of a Shia saint. Beside its historic significance, the countryside around Dehdast is also famous for its wonderful natural formations including the spectacular Nazal Cave.

Cheshmeh Belqeis Garden

Another remnant of the reign of the Sassanid kings is Cheshmeh Belqeis Garden near the city Charam 150 km west of Yasuj. The garden is formed around a natural spring that is the main irrigation water source for the lush vegetation around. Cheshmeh Belqeis Garden had been abandoned for many decades until the Pahlavi era when it was restored and regained its past glory. The place is especially adored for the lofty palms encircling a large pool filled with spring water; a sight that evokes images of a desert oasis.
