The carpet museum of Iran was opened in Tehran in 1978 and exhibits a variety of Persian carpets from all over Iran. On 3,400 sqm. the museum exhibits around 200 carpets that date back from the 16th century to the present. There, you will see carpets from various cities in Iran like Kashan, Kerman, Tabriz, Kurdistan, Isfahan and from many other places. And it is very interesting to know that Iranian women have a crucial role in the design and production of this world-famous Persian handicraft.
If you think a carpet is just a carpet, then be surprised by the variety of carpets you get to see there. They all have different colors, patterns, materials and size. With lots of details to discover, some carpets are just like pictures that are telling a story. Some carpets are even related to the famous Shahnameh stories (Persian Literature). For each carpet an English sign shows where it is from and when it was made. Unfortunately the more detailed descriptions about the carpets are all in Farsi. There is also an upstairs section that holds temporary exhibitions as well as a library with about 7.000 books about carpets!
The Carpet Museum of Iran is open Tuesdays to Thursdays from 9 am to 5 pm. The price of the entrance ticket is 150.000 IRR (about 4 Euros).
The museum is located at the corner of North Kargar Street and Dr Fatemi Street, at the corner of Laleh Park. To get there, take Tehran Metro (Yellow line) to the station Meydan-e Enghelab-e Eslami. When you get out of the station, walk up North Kargar Street. Keep walking until you reach the intersection with Dr Fatemi Street. Turn right onto Dr Fatemi Street and after a few meters you will see the entrance to the museum.
From Enghelab Metro Mtation to the museum it is an easy 20-minute walk. But, If walking is not your thing, there are also local busses running up North Kargar Street from the metro station. Tell the bus driver to drop you off at Dr Fatemi Street.
