Kariz Underground
Kish tourist attractions are hugely varied. The location of the island might
lead you to the false conclusion that there is nothing here but marine fauna and
interminable coastlines. But you couldn’t be further from the truth, since
during
Kish tours you will visit ancient historic sites, water theme amusement
parks and extraordinary funfairs with thrilling water sport facilities as well
as the spectacular beaches north of the Persian Gulf. Among the historic sites,
two are instantly recognizable and much talked about. One is
Harireh Ancient
City, a historic city in ruins and the other one
Kariz Underground City, is the
subject of the present piece. One thing that the ancient inhabitants of Harireh
did to ease the challenges of living on an island, was the construction of
subterranean aqueducts known as Kariz. These canals (also called qanats), were
used to channel underground currents to villages and cities and provide the
inhabitants’ drinking water. The water went through various stages of
purification (involving coral gravel and clay) until it deemed fit for public
use. The purest water lied at the bottom of canals. People used boats to enter
the canals and gather their daily drinking water. For other usage including
washing clothes and bathing, water from upper level of the wells were used. With
the advent of modern irrigation and plumbing facilities, Kariz became obsolete.
However, to maintain its historic status, the officials have renovated the site
and turned it into an expansive complex. In the course of
Kish day tours, you
will visit the complex where you will enjoy its various features beside the
spectacular labyrinthine canals. These include many extraordinary restaurants,
traditional cafés, shops, art galleries and theatres.
As mentioned at the beginning of this article,
Kish boasts a wide array of
tourist spots. We have already talked about two of them, namely Kariz
Underground City and the historic site of Harireh. In the upcoming short
passages, we will introduce some other major highlights of this gorgeous island.
1. Greek Ship
A remnant of a marine mishap over fifty years ago, this massive body of steel is
beached in the southeast coast of Kish. It is a peculiar sight; the ship looks
like a defeated giant in a mythical tale at the throes of annihilation. Tourists
visit the site of the Greek Ship for taking photos (especially during the
magical sunsets of the island), walking in the beautiful coastal public park
nearby or having a camel ride.
2. Grand Recreational Pier
This is a truly wonderful place! There is some fun activity for every age and
taste. The most important of them all is the spectacular promenade that takes
you literally to the middle of the Persian Gulf. Then comes the rare diversity
of recreational activities around the pier. These include boat rides (different
types of boats are available), jet ski rides, parasailing and a whole gamut of
diving adventure. There are also many restaurants, tea houses and shopping
centers in the vicinity of the pier as well as some of the most popular of
Kish
hotels.
3.
Dolphin Park
This is a fantastic amusement park and the first of its kind in Iran. And the
great thing is that beside the exciting dolphin shows, you can visit the amazing
aviary of the park as well as its exotic botanic garden.
