Greek Ship
When Khoula F, a Greek-owned large cargo ship ran aground on the southeast coast
of
Kish Island, its
despondent crew never thought, not even in their wildest dreams, that half a
century later their ship will serve as one of
Kish’s tourist
attractions. The Ship was constructed in Glasgow, Scotland where they
gave her the name Empire Trumpet. But when it beached on the coast of the
Persian Gulf, it was under Greek ownership; hence the name Greek Ship. That is
how the Greek Ship has inscribed her story in Kish’s history. Some might think
that only ancient relics deserve to be remembered in history, but the Greek Ship
proves them wrong. People might wonder what is there but a derelict ship to
attract such a large number of visitors. First and foremost, it is the bedazzling
sunset; a mélange of different shades and colors on the horizon work as a
backdrop to the massive body of the
Greek
Ship. This stunning vista is the favorite location for taking pictures
in Kish. There are many other activities going on around the site of the ship.
You can have a memorable camel ride on the coast while enjoying the sight of the
ship. There is also a newly-established coastal park near the coast where you
can rent bicycles and order food and drinks from the restaurants and cafés.
Thus, the Greek Ship is a must-see during
Kish tours, but there is
much more to the island beside the ship. In what comes below, we will briefly
introduce some of the most popular tourist spots visited during
Kish day tours.
Dolphin Park
In the southeast of Kish near Marjan Shopping Center and some of the most famous
of
Kish hotels,
lies the first dolphin park in Iran. Kish’s
Dolphin
Park is in fact a vast complex that includes a huge aviary, a botanic
garden and restaurants beside dolphin shows. There are other sea mammals
such as sea lions and walruses kept in the Park. The dolphin shows are
spectacular and gather huge crowds who watch the naughty dolphins do acrobatics,
dance and even paint! The aviary of the park includes many species of birds from
different regions of the world. The tickets are sold at the entry of the park
and shouldn’t cost you more than 25 USD per person.
Kariz Underground City
Qanats first appeared in ancient Iran more than three thousand years ago. They
were subtly designed and constructed waterways that channeled subterranean
waters to the city. What is known as
Kariz Underground City is in fact an intricate nexus of interconnected
qanats built sixteen meters under the ground. The whole site has a total area of
about 10 thousand square meters in which many amenities have been added in the
recent years. These include handicraft stores, restaurants and art galleries,
very popular with the foreign tourists. It is also an important archeological
site, known for many prehistoric fossils and sea shells.
Grand Recreational Pier
This is one of the largest piers in Iran built in 2006 to provide a spectacular
promenade in the coast of the Persian Gulf.
Grand Recreational Pier takes you 430 meters into the sea where you will
relish the peaceful dance of the waves and the sound of the seagulls.
Harireh Ancient City
The islands of the Persian Gulf used to be some of the most important centers of
commerce. Around eight hundred years ago,
Harireh was a wealthy city in Kish with a thriving market. Merchants
from all over the world frequented the city and added to its fame and glory.
Today however, all that remains from the ancient city are a couple of monuments
in ruins. But a tour among the cracked walls and fallen ceilings with the
Persian Gulf in the background, fills you with a sense of history and the
fleeting state of the world of men.
