Safi Al-Din was a charismatic follower of the Sufi order. Eventually, he assumed the leadership of Zahediyeh which was an important Sufi Order in Gilan, and since he was an influential and prolific character, the Safaviyya Order was established in his name. Sheik Safi Al-Din who wrote very powerful religious poetry transformed a small group into a growing religious movement which, after his death, spread out of the great Persia all the way to Syria and Asia Minor as well. The leadership of Safaviyya changed hands until it was ultimately designated to Shah Ismail who built the foundations of one of the most powerful dynasties in the region which would later be known as the Safavid Empire.
