Mount Sabalan Crater Lake
Mount Sabalan which is part of the Alborz Mountain Range is located in the
Ardabil Province in the northwestern side of Iran. In terms of popularity, its
peak (15,784 ft) comes third to Damavand Peak in Iran and its slopes
resemble a less glacial Alps. Mount Sabalan is an inactive volcano with a
beautiful crater lake which has turned into a tourist attraction in Ardabil in
its own right; the
Mount Sabalan Crater Lake. This unique lake which is situated
at the peak of the mountain looks like a mirror made out of blue glass held towards
the skies. Its glowing water is surrounded by beautiful rock formations whose
shapes somehow resemble mythical creatures and animals; for example, in one of
the trails toward the peak of the mountain, there is famous and unique rock
formation which appears quite like an eagle. This eagle shaped rock is
considered as one of symbols for Mount Sabalan. That is not all. A notable
number of
Ardabil tourist attractions are located near if not on Mount Sabalan whose volcanic
peak is slightly higher than Mount Blanc in the Alps.
The
Alvares Ski Resort
is such an attraction as it offers great ski runs, hiking
tracks and mountain climbing trails. This great facility is also equipped with
chairlift which is quite popular among the visitors. Apart from this skiing
facility there is a large number of hot springs in the province, and also a
fantastic lake called
Shorabil Lake. So if you are planning to visit the celestial Mount Sabalan Crater Lake, there is a lot of other nearby tourist attractions that you
could see.

So, what would be the best way to visit this scenic region? It depends on your
taste, of course. If you are interested in tours, there are a lot of
Ardabil
tours you can choose from. There are also
Ardabil day tours if you have
limited visit time. However, if you prefer visiting Ardabil on your own, that
could easily be dealt with as well. There are great number of
Ardabil hotels
spread across the whole province; depending on where you prefer to stay and your
budget, you can choose from the likes of Sabalan Grand Hotel, Negin Hotel,
Espinas Hotel and Sarein International Laleh Hotel. By the way, Ardabil has some
interesting cultural and historical places as well which could familiarize you
with this area’s rich history and culture;
Ardabil Anthropology Museum,
Sheikh
Safi Al-Din Shrine, and
Shahar Yeri Historical Site are the most well-known
among Ardabil tourist attractions. Anyhow, speaking of your transportation to
Mount Sabalan Crater Lake, you can either go directly towards Sabalan Mount and
the lake from Ardabil’s provincial center, or visit Meshginshahr City
which is approximately 100 km away from Ardabil’s capital city first and then
head to the mountain. The first option
would mean a two and half hour drive taxi ride, traveling 113 km and
costing roughly 37 dollars. Whatever route you take, do not miss this beautiful
place
sitting at the summit of Mount Sabalan. Remember, visiting this surreal lake is
awarded only to those who are willing to make the climb.
