Zanjan, the capital city of Zanjan province, is one of the biggest cities of the northwest of Iran. The population of Zanjan is about 440,000 people. The city is 298 km far from Tehran, the capital city of Iran. There are many bus services from major cities of Iran to Zanjan. You can easily find a bus going to Zanjan almost every half-hour from Tehran's Azadi terminal. It will take about four hours on Tehran-Tabriz Highway to reach Zanjan. Air travel to the city is only possible from Mashhad, a holy city for Shia Muslims in the northeast of Iran. Rail transport is another option you can use if you want a safe and cheap trip. Due to Zanjan's cold weather during the winter, the best time to visit the city is in spring and summer. Behestan Castle is near Behestan Village and Qezelozen River about 100 km away from Zanjan. This historic castle is also known as Kohan Dezh in Persian which means Old Castle. It takes an hour and half to reach the castle from Zanjan by car and will cost about 35 USD. Behestan Castle dates back to the Median period around 3500 years ago. The current remains of Behestan rocky castle though are mostly related to the Islamic era. Being near the roaring Qezelozen River has made the visit to the castle even more rewarding. Zanjan’s Tourist Attractions

Zanjan’s tourist attractions include a wide array of historical monuments, mosques, museums and natural wonders. There are several tourist spots in and around the city which are among Iran's important attractions. Zanjan’s tourism industry revolves around its unique historic dome, Soltaniyeh. Dome of Soltaniyeh is the world’s largest historic dome made of bricks. The dome was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005. The trip is less than half an hour’s drive from Zanjan and it will cost you about 15 USD. Rakhtshooy Khaneh Edifice, a former public wash-house for women, is another historic site in Zanjan. Built at the beginning of 20th century during Qajar era, the old wash-house has been renovated and now functions as the site of Zanjan’s Museum of Anthropology. Zanjan's covered Bazaar dating back to 19th century, is still the beating heart of the old city. It consists of different sections including traditional shops, caravansaries, mosques and public baths. Saltman Museum is one of the unique museums in Iran. Here you can see mummified figures from Achaemenid and Sassanid periods all discovered in Zanjan’s Chehrabad Salt Mine. The museum is part of Zolfaghari Mansion, a historical monument in an old neighborhood in the northern side of Jameh Mosque of Zanjan. Jameh Mosque of Zanjan is a historic mosque located in the old part of the city. The history of this mosque dates back to Qajar era in 19th century. The mosque has four symmetrical porches decorated with artistic tilework. Jameh Mosque was a religious school in the past and the chambers were residential quarters for theology students. Another historic mosque in Zanjan, also belonging to Qajar era, is Khanoom Mosque. Also, a majestic remnant of Qajar era, the mosque is famous for its short and solid minarets covered with marvelous tilework. Zanjan’s former match factory is another tourist attraction you can visit in the city. The factory is the site of Zanjan’s Museum of Industry. Zanjan is also Iran’s biggest producer of hand-made knives. Zanjan knives and the traditional sandals (charoogh) are the most popular souvenirs of the city.
