Islam, Christianity, Judaism, and Zoroastrianism are the four official religions in Iran. Islam is the religion of the 99 % of the population. Religious minorities constitute only one per cent of the population. Yet, they are free to practice their religion and enter the Iranian parliament. Tehran, Isfahan, and Yazd claim the biggest share of the religious minorities. Religious buildings are among the most popular tourist spots in the country. Zoroastrian Fire Temple in Yazd is one such structure dedicated to the followers of Zoroaster. Fire is sacred and the origin of all life according to the teachings of Avesta (their holy book). The elevated status of fire among the pillars of the faith has led to a more complex conception of the source of light and warmth. The hierarchy of sacred fires includes three separate classes: 1. Atash Behram (Fire of Victory) 2. Atash Adaran (Fire of Fires) 3. Atash Dadgah (of the lowest grade). Each class of fire requires a special sacrament which involves: a. different numbers of priests b. various scriptures such as Gathas, Yasna and Vendidad, and c. different groups of attendants. Atash Behram is also the name of a fire temple that consecrates Atash Behram. There are nine Atesh Behrams in the world. Eight of these are in India and one is in Yazd, Iran. Zoroastrian fire temple in Yazd or Yazd’s Atesh Behram is a huge monument where an Atesh Behram dating back to 470 AD. is preserved. A wealthy Iranian who was a devotee of the faith ordered the construction of the fire temple in 1934. Since then, Yazd’s Atesh Behram has become an important place of worship for Zoroastrians. Yazd boasts the largest population of Zoroastrians in Iran. Followers of the faith revere the fire temple or what they call Atashkadeh (place of fire) in Yazd.
