Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini was born in 1902 in Khomeyn, Iran. After completing his religious studies in Arak, Qom, and Najaf, Ayatollah Khomeini started teaching in seminaries in Najaf and Qom. Unlike many of his peers, Ayatollah Khomeini commented on the political issues of the day. Soon these comments turned into fiery diatribes against the monarchy and the international political scene. In the wake of the demonstrations conducted by the opposition in 1964, things escalated quickly, and Ayatollah Khomeini was arrested. But Ayatollah Khomeini was relentless in his position, and the government had no choice but to banish him from the country. Ayatollah Khomeini spent 15 years in exile in Turkey, Iraq, and France. When he returned triumphantly in 1979, people had already elected him as “the Great Leader,” Imam Khomeini. Although lesser known than his Jamaran house in Tehran, Imam Khomeini House in Qom remains a significant historic site. It is an old house dating back to the late Qajar era. The house and its little yard have no decorations and reflect the modest lifestyle of the late leader of the Islamic Republic. The house was enlisted as a National Heritage Site in 1996 and since then is under the administration of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Tourism. Ayatollah Khomeini bought the house in 1957 and lived there for seven years until the uprising of 1964 (known as the Uprising of 15th of Khordad), when he was arrested and banished from the country. During the years of exile, the house was owned by Ayatollah Pasandideh, Imam’s brother. There is a staircase in the middle of the building that separates the house into the eastern section (Biruni) and western section (Andaruni). The main building of the house opens into a yard with a simple fountain pool surrounded by small trees. The house is the perfect means of entering the mindset of the great revolutionary.
